Solo Travel in Gorgeous Puerto Rico: My First Caribbean Solo Trip!
Puerto Rico was my first time traveling in the Caribbean by myself. I definitely had reservations about traveling solo to Puerto Rico at first, but I’m so glad I decided to go for it! I ended up having the time of my life! Puerto Rico is a beautiful island rich in history, culture, and nature. I’m here to share my story and I hope this inspires you to go and see it for yourself!
WHY PUERTO RICO? Well first off, I wanted a short beach getaway without too much hassle, but I couldn't find anyone to travel with. I had never traveled solo at that time so I started thinking where would be an easy place to go. Somewhere I would feel comfortable and wasn't too far from home. I started researching and P.R. seemed to be my best option. I pressed the booked button and viola, I was set to go.
WHERE DID I STAY? I stayed at the InterContinental SJ in Isla Verde and it was beautiful (see view from my room below). It is about a 10-15 taxi ride from the airport and a great location if you don't want to travel too far into the island.
WHAT DID I EAT? I love spanish food so I was really looking forward to authentic dishes. First thing I noticed was that there is so many American fast food chains because technically, you are still in the United States. I saw everything from The Cheesecake Factory, to Sizzler, and Taco Bell to Subway. Right across the street from the hotel was a Burger King. But I was determined to find some real puerto rican food and thankfully I did.
WHAT WAS MY FAVORITE PART? EVERYTHING! No Seriously, it’s just too hard to choose! Everything was a highlight in it’s own special way. I think my absolute was El Yunque Rain Forest and just sitting on the beach. I have since been back to PR a number of times and have yet to make it to Culebra. One thing I know for sure is the very first thing I will do on my next visit is getting to Culebra. Promise!
WOULD YOU RECOMMEND PUERTO RICO? ABSOLUTELY! It really is a country that has something to offer everyone. If you want to spend your vacation just relaxing on the beach with a piña colada in your hand (see above pic), you totally can. Or if you want to go with your significant other, that’s cool too! I saw families with children, and I saw older couples and even a few other solo female travelers. The island is small enough to really explore if you are ambitious, but also really diverse so you won’t get bored. If you are thinking about a trip to Puerto Rico, do yourself a
favor and GO!
